selection of chunky yarn - what for and how to use

chunky yarn is warm, soft, and works up so fast that you can finish a project in a single evening. Today, I’m sharing my tips on how to choose the perfect chunky yarn for your project and what you can create with it. Stick around until the end, where I’ll share how you can learn to make beautiful chunky projects with me.

Working with thick yarn is pure joy. The stitches are big, the fabric grows before your eyes, and you get that instant “wow” factor when you finish your project quickly.

Chunky yarn is perfect for:

Cozy sweaters, cardigans, and infinity scarves
Soft baby blankets
Home decor like pillows, poufs, and rugs
Large, huggable amigurumi toys

How to Choose Chunky Yarn

Fiber Content

  1. 100% Micro Polyester (plush/chenille) — like YarnArt Dolce, Alize Velluto
  2. Premium Yarns Baby Love. Super soft, hypoallergenic, perfect for baby items and plush toys.
  3. Wool/Acrylic blends — like Alize Megafil Super Lana. Warm, durable, great for garments.
  4. Super fluffy micro polyester — like Alize Softy Mega. Light, airy, and perfect for accessories.

Thickness & Tools
Look for hooks or needles in the US sizes 8–17 (5–12 mm) range. The thicker the yarn, the quicker your project will be done.

Project Purpose

  • For blankets and toys — soft, hypoallergenic micro polyester.
  • For garments — wool blends or dense chenille.
  • For home decor — choose a texture that matches your interior style.

My Favorites

  • YarnArt Dolce — 100% micro polyester plush; 5 skeins = 1×1 m baby blanket or 1–3 plush toys (10–12 inches tall).

  • Alize Velluto — dense velvet chenille; 5 skeins = blanket or cardigan.

  • Alize Softy Mega— fluffy “cloud” yarn, perfect for scarves, hats, and pillows.
