Share
I made this cardigan in size U.S. 18/20 (EU 48‑50), using Alize LanaGold Fine yarn (100 g/390 yd), about 6 skeins—feel free to use any similar mileage yarn. A 3 mm hook, stitch markers, scissors, and a wide-eye needle are all you’ll need
Stitch Key
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- hdc – half‑double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
-
hdc₂ – sl‑st emu‑hdc
All worked through the back loop unless otherwise noted youtube.com+5candy-yarn.com.ua+5candy-yarn.com.ua+5.
1. Create the Motifs
- Make 23 granny‑square motifs, each roughly 8″ × 8″ (20 cm × 20 cm).
- Begin with 4 ch joined into a ring.
- Rounds 1–10 build by repeating groups of dc and ch to form corners and sides. The last round is dc clusters around the square lovecrafts.com.
- 2. Assemble the Cardigan
- Lay out the motifs: 3 across the back and 1 on each front side.
- Join them wrong sides together with sl st along the edge—a neat approach for a clean finish candy-yarn.com.ualovecrafts.com.
- Optional: insert gussets under the arms for added comfort.
3. Edge Finishing
- Pick up yarn at left shoulder and ch 12.
- Round 1: sl st along edge into main squares.
- Round 2: hdc₂ into each loop.
- Round 3: sl st into each stitch on square edges.
-
Alternate rounds of sl st and hdc₂ until you reach desired border width.
(Follow the sequence: 10 stitches, then 8, 6, 4, 2, building up in reverse—see original pattern for full counts) .
4. Blocking & Fit
- Block the finished piece for a polished look, then try it on to check fit. Adjust shoulder width or sleeve length if necessary .
Tips & Notes
- The classic granny‑square style remains timeless—choose solid colors, gradients, or multicolor yarns to match your aesthetic .
- You can also construct this cardigan from just two large hexagonal motifs folded into a kimono shape—see Candy‑Yarn’s earlier version
