Yarn tree craft

Are you counting down the days to Christmas just like me?

The twinkling lights, the smell of pine, cozy evenings with a hot drink in hand — it’s my favorite time of the year. And what better way to get into the holiday spirit than by making something festive with your own two hands?

In this article, I’ll show you two adorable Christmas crochet projects you can make in about 30 minutes each — yes, even if you’re a beginner! These quick patterns are perfect for decorating your home, adding a handmade touch to gifts, or simply enjoying a relaxing evening of crafting.

Mini Crochet Christmas Tree
Small enough to fit in your palm yet charming enough to brighten any corner of your home, this little tree works up quickly and is endlessly customizable. Use it as part of a mantel display, in a holiday gift basket, or even as a table centerpiece for Christmas dinner.

  • I made mine using Any 2-Fine (Sport weight) cotton blend yarn
  • For example: Gazzal Baby Cotton 25, color #3449 Grass — 0.8 oz (23 g) / 89 yds (81 m) — 1 skein
  • You’ll need:
  • 2 mm crochet hook
  • Blunt sewing needle
  • Cardboard for stability
  • Drawing compass (to draw a perfect circle)
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Crochet the tree shape, secure it to a sturdy base, and decorate as you like — beads, miniature ornaments, or even a tiny crochet star on top. This project is beginner-friendly and makes a lovely stocking stuffer.

Christmas Gnome Crochet Pattern
If you’re ready for something a little more detailed, meet my favorite holiday character — the Christmas gnome! With his cozy hat, fluffy beard, and whimsical charm, he’s sure to bring a smile every time you see him.

Materials I used:

  • Alize Cotton Gold #56  3.5 oz (100 g) / 361 yds (330 m), 55% cotton / 45% acrylic — 1 skein Alize Cotton Gold #382 — same specs as above — 1 skein Gazzal Baby Cotton #3456  1.76 oz (50 g) / 180 yds (165 m), 60% cotton / 40% polyacryl — 1 skein YarnArt Melody #881  3.5 oz (100 g) / 252 yds (230 m), 9% wool / 70% polyamide / 21% acrylic — 1 skein (can be replaced with any fluffy “eyelash” yarn)
  • Stuffing (I used hollow fiber)
  • Decorative accents (bells, ribbon, or buttons)
  • 1.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors, sewing needle, monofilament thread, stitch markers, cardboard for the base

This gnome takes a bit more time and precision than the mini tree, but the result is worth it. He looks adorable on a shelf, under the Christmas tree, or as part of your kitchen decor. These gnomes also make wonderful gifts — you can even match their hats to your holiday color scheme.
Handmade decor carries something special — each stitch holds a little of your time, creativity, and care. Friends and family see more than yarn and stuffing; they see your love for the craft.
These projects are also budget-friendly and a great way to use up leftover yarn. And the best part? You get the joy of creating while surrounding yourself with something truly unique.
